Department of Medical Engineering & PhysicsBioengineeringBioengineering, as it is practiced at Royal Perth Hospital, is the application of engineering principles, skills and technology to the solution of clinical problems. This section of the Royal Perth Hospital web site provides information and support to patients and customers external to Royal Perth Hospital who utilize the products and services provided by Medical Engineering & Physics. The Biomaterials and Implant Technology Unit operates from purpose built laboratories on Level 1, North Block on the Wellington Street Campus which include facilities for custom implant design and manufacture, metallurgical preparation, examination and analysis, corrosion testing, materials and equipment testing, tissue assay and computer modeling systems. The Rehabilitation Technology Unit (RTU) comprises Rehabilitation Engineering, Orthotics and Prosthetic Services operating from U Block on the Shenton Park Campus (SPC) of Royal Perth Hospital. Royal Perth Hospital (SPC) provides the States only comprehensive and specialised rehabilitation facility with responsibility for spinal injuries, amputee, neurology, neurosurgery and orthopaedic rehabilitation. The RTU provides tertiary services to hospital patients across these disciplines and where applicable, to community based patients across the State under the Community Aids and Equipment (CAEP) program.
