Plasmodium falciparum?

Sorry!  Take another look.

Note particularly the shape of the parasite towards the centre of the field and the size of the infected red cell.

Plasmodium vivax?

Correct!  Well done.

Good work.  Did you notice that this developing form of the parasite is inside an enlarged red cell?

Plasmodium ovale?

Sorry!  Try again.

A good effort as the parasite is certainly amoeboid with the infected red cell enlarged and from the given history, Plasmodium ovale could not be excluded.  However in the absence of a comet like appearance of the infected red cell this is much more likely to be a different species.

Take another look after going back to the images in the Diagnosis section again

Plasmodium malariae?

Sorry!  Take another look.

Note particularly the shape of the parasite towards the centre of the field and the size of the infected red cell and then try again.

Malarial parasites not seen?

Sorry!  Take another look.

There is one quite large and distinctive parasite in the centre of this field.

Go back to the images in the Diagnosis section to refresh your memory and then try again.
