Plasmodium falciparum?

Sorry!  Go back and have another look.

Look especially at the size and shape of the infected red cell.  Also note the thickness of the parasite ring and the coarse "granulation" throughout the infected red cell.

Plasmodium vivax?

Sorry!  Good effort but try again.

Note the shape of the infected red cell and the patient history which may assist you.

Plasmodium ovale?

Correct!  Very well spotted.

The infected red cell is slightly enlarged and although not really "comet-shaped", it does exhibit a fimbriated edge.  Did the patient history help you in your choice?  Well done.

Plasmodium malariae?

Sorry!  Go back and have another look.

The red cell to the centre of the field contains a malarial parasite have another try and look especially at the size and shape of the infected red cell.  Also note the thickness of the parasite ring and the coarse "granulation" throughout the infected red cell.
