Plasmodium falciparum?

Correct!  Good work.

(We thought we'd give you an easy case to finish this series off with!!)

This is a typical case of P.falciparum with the infected red cells NOT enlarged, fine delicate ring forms and marginal forms of the parasite on display.

Plasmodium vivax?

Sorry!  Try again.

There are numerous quite fine, delicate ring forms in this field.  Have another look and in particular note the size of the infected red cells.

Plasmodium malariae?

Sorry!  Try again.

You probably noted that the infected red cells were not enlarged.  However, there are numerous quite fine, delicate ring forms in this field.  Have another look and in particular note the size of the infected red cells.

Malarial parasites not seen?

Sorry!  Try again!

This is a fairly heavy infection and should never be missed.

There are 8 parasites in this field, which are in the form of fine delicate rings.  Take another look and in particular watch out for the presence of marginal forms.  The size of the infected red cells may also give you a valuable clue.
