Plasmodium falciparum?

Sorry!  Try again.

Species identification is rarely easy from thick films.  The numerous ring forms in this field are very small and as you correctly indicated are of P.falciparum.  We would always recommend species confirmation from a thin film, where possible.

Plasmodium vivax?

Sorry!  Try again.

You probably noted the amoeboid tendencies of the parasites in this field.  Did you also note that the infected red cell is not enlarged?  Have another try and in particular look for the distinctive shape of the parasite in the left of the field

Plasmodium malariae?

Correct!  Excellent work!

Did you observe that the infected red cell was not enlarged and the distinctive "band" form in the centre of the field?

Malarial parasites not seen?

Sorry!  Try again!

There is one parasite present in this field.

Have another look and pay particular attention to the size of the infected red cell.  The distinctive shape of the parasite in the centre of the field should give you a clue.

If you are still unsure, go back to the Diagnosis and the Teach section to refresh your memory.
