Species identification is rarely easy from thick films. The numerous ring forms in this field are very small and as you correctly indicated are of P.falciparum. We would always recommend species confirmation from a thin film, where possible.

You probably noted the amoeboid tendencies of the parasites in this field. Did you also note that the infected red cell is not enlarged? Have another try and in particular look for the distinctive shape of the parasite in the left of the field

Did you observe that the infected red cell was not enlarged and the distinctive "band" form in the centre of the field?

Have another look and pay particular attention to the size of the infected red cell. The distinctive shape of the parasite in the centre of the field should give you a clue.
