Species identification is rarely easy from thick films. The numerous ring forms in this field are very small and as you correctly indicated are of P.falciparum. We would always recommend species confirmation from a thin film, where possible.

The numerous ring forms in this field are very small which may give you a clue. This is a case where use of one of the malaria screening test kits, in addition to thin and thick films would be worth its weight in gold.
Try again and pay particular attention to the history; extremely unlikely to be P.ovale unless the "undisclosed" history involves travel elsewhere.
