49 year old female has spent the last 3 months cruising the Pacific Islands. Spikey temperature. Husband reputedly treated for malaria in Vanuatu.

The ring form in the centre of the field is much bigger and thicker than would normally be expected to be seen in a case of P. falciparum.
Have another look and note the size of the infected red cell.

Plasmodium vivax?

Correct! Well spotted.
Even with only one parasite in this field, you obviously noted that the infected red cell is enlarged and the typical "signet" ring shape of the parasite.

Plasmodium ovale?

Sorry! A good try but take another look.
You obviously noted that the infected red cell is enlarged however take another look and even though a slightly ovoid infected red cell, note particularly the history.
