Malaria Self Test Module
Oil rig worker, has been working in SE Asia for several weeks. Now febrile.

Click on one of the following:
Plasmodium falciparum?

Correct! Good work.
Not the best stained film we have ever seen but you were still able to identify the fine ring forms and the marginal form. One of the infected red cells appears to be enlarged, however this field is in the tail of the film and in fact it is no larger than some of the non infected red cells.

Plasmodium vivax?

Sorry! Take another look.
Note that the 3 ring forms (did you spot the one at about one o'clock?) are quite small and delicate and that one is a marginal form. Even though at least one of the infected red cells looks to be enlarged, clearly this field is from the tail of the film and a number of the non infected red cells are of a similar size.

Plasmodium malariae?

Sorry! Take another look.
Note that the 3 ring forms (did you spot the one at about one o'clock?) are quite small and delicate and that one is a marginal form. There are no obvious band forms present.

Malarial parasites not seen?

Sorry! Try again.
This is not a particularly well stained slide; even so there are 3 quite distinct parasites in this field, two in the centre and one at about one o'clock.
Note especially the marginal form and then try again.
