Plasmodium falciparum?

Sorry!  Have another look.

Look especially for the presence of ring and/or
developing forms and note the patient history.

Malarial parasites not seen?

Correct!

OK.  We confess it was a trick slide!

You probably realised from the history (which at times can be misleading)
that malaria was unlikely since Hong Kong and Taiwan are malaria free areas.
Of course there is always the possibility that the patient may have gone elsewhere.

However, we could not resist this platelet sat on top of the red cell and
together with "water rings" inside some of the red cells, thought it might
prove to be a useful exercise in identifying "negative" malaria slides.
