"Surfie" recently returned from Indonesia.

Plasmodium falciparum?

Sorry! Have another look.
The four parasites in this field are all in the developing stage, (the left most parasite is tending towards being amoeboid and the ring is certainly very thick). Developing stages in P.falciparum are seen very rarely. In addition the infected red cells are all enlarged.
Try again; refer back to the Diagnosis and the Teach pages if necessary.

Plasmodium vivax?

Correct! Well Done.
Did you note that the infected red cells were enlarged and that the parasites were all in the developing stage?

Plasmodium ovale?

Sorry! Good try.
You obviously noted that the infected red cells were enlarged and that the parasites are in the developing stage.
Have another look and note particularly the patient history. P.ovale from Indonesia would be extremely unlikely.
