Much of the learning during the intern year relates to generic skills such as skills in assessing patients, formulation of management plans, and accepting increasing responsibility within a supportive and supervised environment.

  • Learn under the guidance of senior staff with a strong commitment to teaching
  • RPH is a Primary Allocation Centre with Junior Doctor rotations to other metropolitan and rural hospitals including: Bunbury, Kalgoorlie and Port Hedland Regional Hospitals
  • The intern year provides a broad range of medical/surgical experiences
  • All interns rotate through Emergency Medicine
  • Interns are not on-call overnight. The only interns who work overnight are those on shift in the Emergency Department
  • Protected educational time for interns
  • Weekly educational programme for interns
  • Established skills development programme for junior doctors including an on-site level 2 patient simulator
  • Weekly grand rounds on Wednesdays
  • A well-equipped library and computer lab on-site, and on-line access to Clinical Databases and texts

Term Rotations

The emphasis for the intern year provides a broad range of medical/surgical experiences under the guidance of senior staff with a strong commitment to teaching. There are also rotations to the Shenton Park Campus and Bentley Hospital in the metropolitan area. Country postings are to, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie and Port Hedland Regional Hospitals. Applicants will be asked to indicate a preference for terms when an offer of employment is made.

RPH terms for interns are linked in order to provide balance and to meet the Medical Board of WA’s requirements for registration. Each intern participates in five rotations for the year.

Term dates for 2009 are as follows:

Term 1: 19.01.09 - 29.03.09
Term 2: 30.03.09 - 07.06.09
Term 3: 08.06.09 - 23.08.09
Term 4: 24.08.09 - 08.11.09
Term 5: 09.11.09 - 17.01.10

Education Programme

Royal Perth Hospital has protected educational programme time for interns. This twice weekly programme is overseen by consultants and senior registrars, and comprises in-depth discussion of clinical problems faced by the interns. There is also an active skills development programme for junior doctors, including an on-site level 2 patient simulator.

There is an established Department of Postgraduate Medical Education, with a Director of Postgraduate Medical Education, Directors of Clinical Training, Medical Education Officers and Senior Registrars in Medical, Surgical and Emergency Education. The staff support the Pre-vocational Training Programme and provide educational, vocational and personal support for interns and resident medical officers at Royal Perth Hospital. Basic Physician and Basic Surgical Training programmes are in place and are well supported.

There are weekly grand rounds on Wednesdays and Registrar Rounds on Fridays where interesting clinical material is presented. Individual department journals and textbooks complement a well-equipped library on site. The hospital has online access to Clinical Databases and texts.
