RPH congratulates Clinical Professor Sasson (Sonny) Gubbay, who has been recognised for his contributions to Neurology by receiving the Member of the Order of Australia.

He received the Australia Day honour for "service to medicine in the field of neurology, particularly through clinical and academic contributions to the neurological care of both children and adults, and as a teacher and mentor."

As one of the first graduates of the University of Western Australia Medical School in 1957, Clinical Professor Gubbay completed his junior resident training through Royal Perth Hospital.

Professor Gubbay then travelled the world between 1962 and 1965 to acquire clinical and electrophysiological skills in the area of neurology to bring back to Western Australia.

He provided clinical services at Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner and Princess Margaret Hospital until 1974 when he then consolidated his time between Princess Margaret and Royal Perth Hospitals, a service he continues to this day.

His clinical teaching skills are renowned.  He has spent years teaching valuable clinical neurology skills and inspiring undergraduate medical students, postgraduate doctors and paramedical staff.

In addition to being a full time clinician Clinical Professor Gubbay completed a doctoral degree in 1973 and has authored and co-authored 150 articles in many areas of neurology, including 70 research articles and reviews.

Clinical Professor Gubbay was Head of Department of Neurology at Royal Perth Hospital for six years from 1978 to 1984 and has served on both the Medical Advisory Committee and Electoral Committee at Royal Perth Hospital.

He has sat on many committees within medicine, education and community support groups and does all of this during his own time.

Throughout his 40 years in clinical neurology he has provided mentorship and guidance to most of the current day neurologists. His vision for the future and commitment to teaching have shaped the development of neurology care for children and adults in Western Australia.

Clinical Professor Gubbay's guidance, research and clinical expertise will have an impact on Neurology in Australia for many years to come which makes him a more than worthy recipient of the Order of Australia.
