Surgical Education and Training (SET)

The Surgical Education and Training program (SET) is designed to streamline surgical training in the nine disciplines in which the College awards its diploma. Royal Perth Hospital and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) are committed in ensuring the highest standard of safe and comprehensive surgical care for the community we serve. For a more detailed outline of SET, please visit RACS website (www.surgeons.org).

A vast array of surgical specialities terms is available at Royal Perth Hospital as well as Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care. Currently there are Trauma Grand Rounds fortnightly, many structured teaching programs within the subspecialties as well as informal teaching sessions. A well-stocked library and Internet access to major journals complements the learning opportunities. Further teaching opportunities will be developed with the recent appointment of a Senior Registrar in Surgical Education.

Emergency Physician Training

The Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department (ED) is a large, high-acuity, inner-city tertiary hospital with a large trauma caseload and admits many patients with complex medical issues.

The Emergency Department has a comprehensive and successful teaching program for all registrars working and training in ED. It offers a year-long, consultant-led, Primary exam teaching program with weekly protected teaching time. This program follows the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine syllabus and has a high pass rate for candidates. In addition to formal teaching sessions, there is an on-the-floor consultant dedicated for bedside and procedural teaching.

The Emergency Department also runs an intensive and successful Fellowship program for Advanced trainees, with formal and bedside teaching, and comprehensive exam preparation on a weekly basis. Program includes formal teaching sessions in ultrasound and toxicology.

The Director of Emergency Medicine Training (DEMT) is responsible for supporting the educational and administrative needs of doctors training in Emergency Medicine.

Education

Transition Program

The transition to Registrar can be a stressful time for the RMO. The doctor assumes a significant amount of responsibility during this time, and frequently feels out of depth both in terms of knowledge and experience. However, at Royal Perth Hospital we are keen to support a smooth transition into the role of Registrar. This 2-day course aims to provide information regarding the transition from RMO to Registrar and how to best handle this time. The program has been specifically designed to provide participants with leadership skills, stress management skills, as well as knowledge-based skills for the complex situations you may encounter as a Registrar.

Teaching on the Run

To assist its doctors in providing a supportive environment conducive to learning, RPH conducts Teaching on the Run modules for its clinical staff. Teaching on the Run acknowledges most doctors have to teach on the run and is tailored to the clinical setting. The program is available for those who teach and wish to learn about ways to do what they already do (probably) well, better.

Program aims:

  • Provide skills to assist the teacher in the teaching process
  • Increase confidence to teach and supervise in busy clinical settings

Modules:

  • Clinical (bedside) Teaching
  • Skills training
  • Feedback and Assessment
  • Supporting trainees
  • Planning Term Learning
  • Effective Group Teaching

Education - general

In addition to department specific programs, RPH conducts weekly grand rounds on Wednesdays. Residents are also welcome at the weekly intern education program. Individual department journals and textbooks complement a well-equipped library on site. The hospital has on-line access to Clinical Databases and texts.
