Royal Perth offers a variety of medical specialties as well as peripheral hospital rotations including Bentley, Albany, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie Hospitals.
Specialties include Cardiology (including transplant medicine), Clinical Immunology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Haematology including Ambulatory Care, HITH (Hospital in the Home), Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care, Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Nephrology (including transplant medicine), Neurology, Palliative Care, Radiation Oncology, Respiratory Medicine and Rheumatology / Endocrine.

Royal Perth Hospital runs Basic Physician training (BPT) program in accordance with the Physician Readiness for Expert Practice” program of Royal Australasian College of Physician. The Director of Physician Education (DPE) works with clinical services to ensure trainees meet specific college requirements for training recognition. We offer a structured teaching program for the written and clinical RACP examinations, which has led to above national average pass rates for our candidates.

Entry into the clinical program is competitive, and early contact with the DPE is desirable. We also offer a range of other educational activities such as grand rounds, teaching rounds and departmental education sessions. A well-stocked library and Internet access to major journals complements the learning opportunities.

For those interested, information regarding future training requirements under PREP program can be obtained from: http://www.racp.edu.au/page/home. It is important for junior doctors planning on becoming physicians to enrol as early as possible as retrospective accreditation of training may not occur in the future.

Surgical Education and Training (SET)

The Surgical Education and Training program (SET) is designed to streamline surgical training in the nine disciplines in which the College awards its diploma. Royal Perth Hospital and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) are committed in ensuring the highest standard of safe and comprehensive surgical care for the community we serve. For a more detailed outline of SET, please visit RACS website (www.surgeons.org).

A vast array of surgical specialities terms is available at Royal Perth Hospital as well as Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care. Currently there are Trauma Grand Rounds fortnightly, many structured teaching programs within the subspecialties as well as informal teaching sessions. A well-stocked library and Internet access to major journals complements the learning opportunities. Further teaching opportunities will be developed with the recent appointment of a Senior Registrar in Surgical Education.

The Emergency Department also runs an intensive and successful Fellowship program for Advanced trainees, with formal and bedside teaching, and comprehensive exam preparation on a weekly basis. Program includes formal teaching sessions in ultrasound and toxicology.

Education

Transition program – Resident to Registrar

The transition to Registrar can be a stressful time for the RMO. The doctor assumes a significant amount of responsibility during this time, and frequently feels out of depth both in terms of knowledge and experience. However, Royal Perth Hospital is keen to support a smooth transition into the role of Registrar. This annual two-day course provides information regarding the transition from RMO to Registrar and how to best handle this time. The program has been designed to provide participants with leadership skills, stress management skills, as well as knowledge-based skills for the complex situations Registrars may encounter.

Teaching on the Run

To assist its doctors in providing a supportive environment conducive to learning, RPH conducts Teaching on the Run modules for its clinical staff. Teaching on the Run acknowledges most doctors have to teach on the run and is tailored to the clinical setting. The program is available for those who already teach.

Program Aims:

  • Provide skills to assist the teacher in the teaching process
  • Increase confidence to teach and supervise in busy clinical settings

Modules:

  • Clinical (bedside) Teaching
  • Skills Training
  • Feedback and Assessment
  • Supporting Trainees
  • Planning Term Learning
  • Effective Group Teaching

Education - general

In addition to department specific programs, RPH conducts weekly grand rounds on Wednesdays and Registrar Rounds on Fridays where interesting clinical material is presented. Individual department journals and textbooks complement a well-equipped library on site. The hospital has on-line access to Clinical Databases and texts.
