Podiatry Department
The Podiatry Department is a specialist podiatry (feet) unit, focussing on the management of high acuity patients with an emphasis on wound management.
The Podiatry Department at RPH was established more than 50 years ago and provides a clinical service to patients categorised as 'high risk'.
It treats conditions such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, chronic renal disease, arthritic conditions and immuno-suppressive disorders.
These chronic disease processes predispose patients to problematical foot conditions such as ulceration, infection, amputation and neuropathic joint disease.
The department operates in a multi-disciplinary environment and works closely with other departments including Endocrinology/Diabetes, Microbiology, Vascular, Rheumatology, Orthopaedics and Amputees.
The department is also responsible for the Multi-Disciplinary Foot Ulcer Clinic (MDFUC), a medical clinic opened in 2004 to manage patients with complicated foot ulceration.
