The Language Services Department provides an on-site interpreting service in over 60 languages to the hospital staff and patients.
Language Services uses the skills of over 50 language contractors, two full time interpreters (Chinese and Vietnamese) and interpreters who are booked through TIS (Translating and Interpreting Service) and the WA Deaf Society.
The department operates during standard office hours. For after-hours interpreters, the Hospital staff contact TIS or the WA Deaf Society.
The department provides over 150 on-site interpreting services every week at both RPH’s Wellington Street and Shenton Park campuses, as well as at the Mercy Restorative Unit and Ursula Frayne Unit in Mt Lawley , and visiting some patients at home.
Requests for interpreters and the allocation of interpreters are managed through a specifically designed new Language Services Computer System (LASS).
The department has four full time staff including the Manager, a Booking Clerk and two Interpreters (Chinese and Vietnamese).
