Intensive Care Unit

ABOUT US

The Royal Perth Hospital Intensive Care Unit is the largest ICU in Western
Australia. The ICU is a very busy, dynamic quaternary referral centre and sees the most acutely ill patients in WA. There is great variety in the case-mix and a large collective experience in managing acutely ill patients from all medical and surgical specialities. All critical care interventions are performed at RPH ICU. There is a great opportunity to learn about all facets of critical care medicine at its most acute.

  • Major trauma: Royal Perth Hospital is the designated State Adult Major Trauma Service Hospital. A dedicated 30 bed state-of-the-art Trauma ward is also located near the ICU. The service is backed up by a dedicated trauma surgical service as w ell as a world-class interventional radiology service. The service routinely receives over 600 multiple trauma patients each year and about 50% will require ICU admission. Complex pelvic and spinal injury patients are referred here for definitive surgical management.

  • Severe burns: RPH ICU has unique experience in the management of complex severe burns including inhalational injury. RPH ICU played a major role in the management of the victims from the 2002 Bali bombing.

  • Complex spinal surgery including scoliosis surgery

  • Heart and Lung Transplantation and Advanced Heart Failure Support. Royal Perth Hospital is the State centre for management of advanced heart failure, complex cardiothoracic surgery and cardiopulmonary transplantation. We routinely manage emergency and elective patients with intra-aortic counterpulsation (IABP), pacing, multiple types of left and right ventricular assist devices (VADs) and veno-venous and veno-arterial (V-V or V-A ECMO).

  • Largest proportion of transfers from rural hospitals in Western Australia via RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service-fixed wing) and the WA ERHS (Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service)

The Royal Perth Hospital Intensive Care Unit / High Dependency Area consists of 32 beds and is split into three adjoining and interconnected areas:
