Clinical Immunology
Departmental Programs
Some of the programs operating to optimise patient management are:
1) Rural and Remote Immunology Service
To support patients with HIV infection, and the medical and nursing staff managing them, in non-metropolitan regions of Western Australia. Nurse Coordinator Allison Cain supervises this service.
2) Multi-disciplinary Management of Pregnant HIV Infected Women
Pregnant HIV infected women are managed by a team of Obstetricians, Immunologists and Pediatricians, with the support of nurses and Social Workers at RPH and PMH.
3) Post exposure prophylaxis for occupational exposure to blood-borne virus infections
RPH staff who have had a possible exposure to a blood borne virus infection are assessed and managed by nursing and medical staff under the supervision of Nurse Coordinator Esther Edward. Advice on the use of antiretroviral therapy is available to health professionals outside of RPH.
4) Clinical Trials Unit
Trials of new treatments and clinical research studies on immunological disorders, mainly HIV disease are supervised by medical and nursing staff with assistance from Nurse Coordinator Claire Forsdyke.
5) Individualised patient management program
A team including social workers, clinical psychologists, nurses, other medical staff and community workers care for HIV patients experiencing major adherence difficulties. This team is supervised by social worker Alex Coombs.
6) Organ donor search program
Nursing staff coordinate family studies and international searches to identify haematopoietic stem cell transplant donors for the bone marrow transplant program under the supervision of the Program Manager A/Prof Campbell Witt.
