Director General Dr DJ Russell-Weisz recently congratulated 19 participants from across the health system for completing the 2017 Emerging Leaders Program.

The Emerging Leaders Program is designed to further develop the leadership skills of senior staff to promote excellence across all areas of the health system.

Each candidate was selected from a competitive field based on their work inspiring their colleagues to effect positive change.

At the graduation ceremony, participants shared their reflections and experiences from the program. Most notably, participants developed a supportive network of colleagues from across the system allowing for greater collaboration, knowledge sharing and in one case, a new job.

EMHS Director Clinical Services Planning Sarah Ward said she was fortunate to participate in the program and be given access to skilled and experienced teachers.

“Not only did the program teach me to become a better leader, it gave me the opportunity to learn about how I operate as a leader.”

“I was given the time and tools to hone my skills and take my learnings back to the workplace,” Sarah said. “Among other things, I learnt techniques to employ when having difficult conversations, tools for effective team building, time management tips and techniques to improve resilience.”

Sarah encourages others to utilise the course. “I would encourage anyone in any level of leadership in any discipline to actively seek out this opportunity. I met and bonded with like-minded health staff from all sectors and am confident the relationships we built will continue into the years ahead.”

The program is delivered by the Australian Institute of Management and includes modules that explore leadership from the perspective of the self, the organisation and others.
